Step 3 | The drugs
Select from the list of antibiotics below to learn which antibiotics treat patients when they are infected by each bacteria.
The charts will indicate if the antibiotics have a high, medium or low efficacy for treating an infection caused by the bacteria.
Keep an eye out for:
- Antibiotics that are only able to treat patients with an infection at a particular body site, e.g. the bladder.
- How antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria impact on the efficacy of an antibiotic in treating a patient.
Key
Antibiotic efficacy level | Description |
---|---|
Low | A limited or absent ability to treat a patient infected with the bacteria |
Medium | A moderate or variable ability to treat a patient infected with the bacteria; to normally only be used if a laboratory susceptibility test has proven the antibiotic is effective in treating an infection caused by the bacteria |
High | A good ability to treat a patient infected by the bacteria; can often be relied on without a laboratory susceptibility test proving the antibiotic is effective in treating an infection caused by the bacteria |
Select an antibiotic from the list.
